Professional Longarm Services

“Longarming” is the process of sewing the three layers of a quilt together (top, batting, and back). It can be done with a hoop by hand, but many people choose to have their work quilted by longarm sewing.

Quilt Studio 55, located in Scarborough Maine, is available for longarm quilting services on hand made and heirloom quilts. Choose from a variety of pantograph designs to be sewn on your beautiful artistic creations, or consult on a custom free motion design.

Longarm quilting in action. This video is some free motion custom work for a Quilt Studio 55 client. Your pattern could be a pantograph or custom work, depending on your vision of how your quilt will be used.

Quilt Preparation Instructions

For your quilt to be finished by the agreed completion date, it is important to drop off or mail your project fully prepared for longarm service. The highest quality work and best results are achieved when all these steps have been done in advance:

Verify:

  1. The backing needs to be 6-8" larger than the quilt top, or 3-4" larger all around the quilt top.
  2. Iron the quilt top and all seams to one side or iron seams open.
  3. Iron the backing of the quilt and all seams open. Seams should be 1/2" wide with selvages removed.
  4. Make sure your quilt top is squared up.
  5. Make sure the backing is squared up, with all four sides evenly cut.
  6. Do not baste or pin the layers together.
  7. If you are supplying batting, it needs to be 6-8" larger than the quilt top, or 3-4" larger all around the quilt top.
  8. Clip all loose threads from the front and back of the quilt.
  9. Label the top of the quilt and backing if needed.

General Pricing Options

Longarm quilting is priced by the square inch; generally from about 3 cents to 8 cents or more, depending on complexity of the pattern and density of stitching. By browsing the pantographs you will see prices for each pattern. Freehand and custom stitching is quoted separately as we review the design you would like on your quilt. Pricing estimates are best done by consultation in the studio or by phone.

Jaki has done wonderful longarm services for me for 4 years. She has a great selection of pantographs, but her specialty is custom quilting. She is meticulous and creative and I do not hesitate to give her my most special items. She is also accurate with her estimates when the work will be completed. Her rates are competitive and considering the quality of the completed quilt, well worth the money. I highly recommend her and have referred my friends to her as well.

Jaki gave me a private lesson in "Beginner's Quilting." Although I've been sewing most of my life, her instruction brought me up-to-date on current techniques for quilt making. With her clear directions, patience, and superior skills, I learned so many of the "new" basics, such as cutting four layers of fabric, effective use of rulers, efficient ways of cutting out pieces, and tips for pressing seams. In just two hours I came away with renewed confidence to dive deeper into quilting.

I have been bringing my quilts to Jaki at Quilt Studio 55 for several years to be pieced together. Each and everyone has been beautifully finished to perfection. Jaki is always kind and extremely knowledgeable in helping me make the final choices in finishing my quilts. I feel extremely fortunate to have found Quilt Studio 55 and look forward to having Jaki finish more of my quilting and hope to take some of her wonderful classes in the future. Thank you again Jaki for the beautiful work you do.
